On April 15, 2019 a journalist brought to the attention of Franciscan University of Steubenville matters pertaining to Reverend Joseph Moore, a now-laicized priest of the Diocese of Bridgeport in Connecticut. The University has no records regarding physical abuse by Moore when serving at Franciscan University. Moore was removed from ministry by the Diocese of Bridgeport in 1997 in light of reports of abuse that did not involve Franciscan University. Sexual misconduct is a serious sin and a crime. Anyone with information about Moore, or others, harming anyone at Franciscan University is encouraged to contact the Steubenville Police or the University.
The Historical Review and Actions Taken Regarding Campus Safety disclosure has been amended within hours of the information being reported and verified. You can also see the addition on page 10, here.
Father Sean Sheridan, TOR, President of Franciscan University, and Father Malachi Van Tassell, TOR, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, wrote in the introductory letter of the University’s disclosure, “If new information comes to light as a result of additional reports, the list disclosed today will be updated, and any priest or employee with a substantiated allegation of unwelcome sexual contact, and who is still in service, will be removed from ministry at our University.”
Franciscan University is committed to living with Integrity and Truth and asks those who may have information about anyone being abused to come forward as soon as practically possible.
